In simple terms, I believe it's locking it (the trannys converter) up (pressing the brake and the gas pedal simultaneously), prior to launch.

Flashing the converter is no stall at all! the engine gets a jump on the converter action of locking in. This gives the best torque multiplication but not the fastest times. Its a combo of both until you blow the tires and go up in smoke. I had better recovery from tire spin with higher pressure in rear tires in my old pure stock days
