Yep hydrogen is what rockets use to get to the moon! Even an AGM battery like Optima and the Diehard AGM battery I installed in my C7 generates hydrogen when charging.
They typically (like Optima) have a pressure bursting disk that only opens if internal pressure gets over a few lbs. Then hydrogen is released. One small spark and boom! That is why the Coast Guard require battery boxes to be vented in boats, EVEN AGM's!
