I'm sure you know better than to paint the mating surface of the hubs , but as for the outside, there's no issue with running 2000-degree paint. Just be prepared for flaking, scalding, etc.
Are there any downsides to painting the wheel hubs with a heat resistant paint? Get tired of taking the rust off with a wire wheel. Don
I use Gunks Squeal Medic, it works great and can be cleaned off easier than paint. You can also spray it on the aluminum chassis parts and bolts/nuts to prevent rust.
I've had success with just plain Rustolium paint. I actually brushed it on since it drys slow, it levels out plus its over cast iron so brush strokes don't show. I just thinned it out a little so it soaks in.

Interesting idea since it would control the area of application and you don't need to tape off NEARLY as much.
