CAGS is detected by the ECM under certain specific conditions (temp, throttle tip, speed). If you hit the right combo, the CAGS light comes on and you are cordially invited to shift from 1st to 4th. Either program it out via the ECM or get the CAGS eliminator for $30 and plug it in to the car.

Thanks, I thought when the ECM sent a signal, gears 2 and 3 were blocked at the shifter so that you could not shift into them.

Nope,
2 and 3 are blocked at the transmission. The CAGS unit plugs in down there and interrupts the command to activate the CAGS solenoid. The signal is sent, but blocked and the CAGs solenoid still appears to be working perfectly to the ECM.

When I changed to an aftermarket shifter, I did not see any sensors on the shifter itself or the rod connecting to the transmission.
There is a Hall Effect sensor somewhere that senses which gear the transmission is in, and I am still trying to find out if anyone knows exactly where that is located..
