Anyone ever weigh a base or Z51? GM says they weigh the same but I find it hard to believe all the hardware the Z51 has weighs nothing. Not making a case against the Z51 but GM is clear to point out exactly how much advantage the Z51 has based on 5hp advantage.
Really .3 seconds 0 to 60 for 5hp?!?!?
I'd be interested in knowing real world weights!
Dry sump, more oil/tank w/larger pump, rear diff cooler, sensors on 4 corners, larger brakes/wheels, additional rear sway bar that the base does not have. I'm thinking 100 lbs more at least?
Stingray 3298lbs
0 to 60 4.0 seconds
power to weight 7.25:1 (curb weight/horsepower)
Stingray with Z51 3298lbs
0 to 60 3.8 M7 - 3.7 seconds w/A8
power to weight 7.17:1 (curb weight/horsepower)
Z51 is 80-100 lbs heavier and does not make more power than the base except that npp is standard on z51 in 2015 but it wasn't in 2014.
the faster launch is attributable to the automatic transmission and possibly different gearing only. the A6 was also faster from a dig than the M7, all else equal.
either way it's a drivers race. you buy a Z51 if you need a dry sump motor, which 90% do not and/or you want magnetic ride suspension.
The dry-sump oil system is the one thing I wish I could removed from my Z51 package, otherwise, I'm very happy with it for street use!
The dry sump and electronic differential prevented me from purchasing the Z51 option. I went with the base suspension. I too am very happy with my decision.
Gm spec 3298 base full of fuel.
Z51 is 60 pounds more.
No!
Magazine tests showed a curb wight of 3444 lbs for the 2014 M7 Z51. As I posted above, my M7 Z51 1LT with mag dampers almost full of fuel weighs 3411 on my corner weighing scales. That is almost 140-150 lbs more than GM's advertised weight for the base model. And I would imagine a 3LT Z51 weighs even more.
Here are the corner weights of my M7 C7 Z51 1LT and mag dampers with not much more than 1 gallon (7 lbs) missing from a full fuel tank, so basically at its curb weight.

My 1 lt Z51 full of fuel everything out of the car with comp seats was 3350.
So 50-60 pounds heavier is a Z51 over a base car.

Nope only 60 pounds heavier
Mine had no mag dampers that's the weight difference. Those are heavy!

Fuel capacity is 18.5 gallons which weighs about 7 lbs per gallon, so the curb weight includes 130 lbs of fuel. If car is weighed with only 3/4 of a tank of fuel, weight will be 33 lbs less, and at half a tank of fuel, 65 lbs less.
Z51 adds a lot of stuff and thus weight over the base car, including the dry sump system with tank and extra oil, the diff cooler and plumbing lines and duct, the transmission cooler and plumbing lines and duct, the eLSD, bigger rotors front and rear, bigger calipers front and rear, bigger wheels front and rear, bigger tires front and rear, larger spoiler, sway bars. It would be amazing if all those extras only added 60 lbs.
Assuming the magazines are weighing a 3LT M7 Z51 with mag dampers, they all report about the same weight, slightly higer than mine which is the same except with the 1LT trim level. Here is another road test with the Z51 at 3,443 lbs.
and some good info here on weight of components for the C7 vs C6 and why the car gained weight. Base dry weight is 3160 lbs to which you add 138 lbs for fluids and curb weight is 3298 lbs.

New scale to boot! C7 Z51 no options but comp seats. My ZR1 full of fuel also weighed 3350 same scale That is right weight for a ZR1.
Plus some of your facts are wrong the rear rotors are actually lighter and the same size on the rear of the Z51.
Mag tests are all LOADED cars not the same each level weighs more.
