I've always done all my own work/mods, and have done a ton of cam/head swaps. I was reading this thread thinking, "Man, these guys are pathetic! Its just a cam swap, you big babies!".
Uh...........Then I read the article linked above showing a cam swap on the new LT1.
Make room for another pathetic baby! You guys were NOT kidding. What a mother of a job, wow. Nothing in there that is too difficult, but the number of steps is terrible. The only thing you don't have to remove is the windshield.
I have never done an LSx cam swap before, but have rebuilt a good amount of engines from Honda's and Toyota's. I've done some work on motors for non overhead cam cars as well, just not as much. After reading the above article, this still doesn't seem that bad in my opinion. I would consider doing this in my garage over a vacation week if it weren't for having to drop the cradle. I wonder has anyone considered disconnecting the forward motor mounts and hoisting the engine up enough to get the oil pump to clear? May make this easier. Also would be good to get spare heads and build the valve train ahead of time so your heads are ready to go. Are any steps different if you delete DoD/AFM and keep VVT?
