Default Which brake pads for HPDE track use?

I have done a HPDE with my Z51 optioned C7 and now would like to upgrade to a track use brake pad. I am hoping for info from those who have used other than stock Z51 pads on track--what pads did you use and what were you experiences with that pad-good or bad? Any info greatly appreciated especially if like me you are still running the stock Z51 tires. Thank you for your time.

I'm using Hawk DTC-60's in my Z51. Great on track but you have to swap them out for street pads as they will chew up the rotors when run cold on the street (abrasive friction when cold versus adhesive friction on track), and that makes a ton of metallic dust on the wheels which rusts when water gets on them, so best to clean the dust off quickly. I put the Hawks in, drive to track and back home, and put OEM pads back in. Z51 rotors are very soft. On my GT-R I have upgraded to PFC rotors and they are very hard and I can leave the Hawk DTc-60's in all year round without chewing up the rotors. AP Racing rotors would also be good like PFC which are not yet making C7 rotors.

I run PFC08 on the front, and Carbotech XP12 on the rear. I leave them in during track season which for me comes two times a year, spring and fall. The winter and summer months I run the stock pads. Of course like any track pad, the pfc08 / xp12s make a lot of noise on the street. Both seam easy on the rotors. I get great performance on the pfc08s, plus they last a long time. I have DBA rotors on the front, stock on the rear.

Many of our customers use Ferodo DS1.11 for the track. It's an endurance racing compound that lasts a long time, has a nice feel, and easy on the discs.

Front Ferodo DS1.11 for C7 Z51

Rear Ferodo DS1.11 for C7 Z51

The aren't the cheapest pads out there, but in our experience they are one of the most durable, so you get your money's worth.

When you're looking for new track discs, please check out our AP Racing J Hook's as well. We have them front and rear for your car. .

Default Updates

Subscribe-very interested in learning more about HPDE pads and possible rotor combinations. From what I have gleaned on the CF, there are parallels to this topic and the ideas related to A/S or Summer only tires.

There are track day and street use pads, but finding the golden mean between the two uses may prove elusive.

How about beefing up the fronts (pads and rotors), and leaving the rears with the stock Z-51 rotors and pads?

Over the years Ive tried PFC99s/etc, Hawk dt60/70, and now Carbotechs 8/10/12.

IMHO Carbotech gives 95% of the performance, but the big edge to me is in ease of cleanup. Worlds better washing your car/rims with their pads.

They mostly all squeel like a UPS truck when cold, so if you dont swap pads in and out, you'll likely get a few weird stares when rolling in the cruise-in or out on date night in a 60-100k car.

I've been very happy with Hawk DtC70/60s. On past cars, Carbotechs didn't play nice with stock compounds and led to needing rotor swaps due to steering wheel wobble.

Default Brakes Z51 track and street

I like Carbotech combo for street and track.
I use the carbotech XP12 Front and XP10 rear for the track.
And Carbotech 1521 for street.
This allows same rotors and no squeaking for daily use.
Both are "low dust" for their respective applications and perform well.

Are you not looking to swap pads for track and street?

Canadian, how long have you been running with this set up? I was curious about the wear on the rotors, and, if you have a Z-51, are you installing the cooling rings? Also, about how long are your track runs? --in minutes.

I am open to swapping rotors and pads to improve the braking performance. Currently, I have a set of 1521s all around, (low dust claim is confirmed with my street driving!) and wondered about the long-term implications for the stock Z-51 rotors by swapping in more aggressive track pads.

Another option, Raybestos ST43. I've used a number of different brands and compounds, these are my current favorite. If you search on ST43 you will find posts reviewing their performance with others mentioned on this thread.

My C7 Z51 is new to me, so I have not run these with that configuration.

If you have the 1521 already I would stick with Carbotech. All Carbotech compounds are compatible with each other So, all you would do is swap pads and go. Rotor wear is gong to happen no matter what but the beauty of the Carbotech compounds is they are probably one of the most rotor friendly pads on the market.

What tires will you be using and what track?

I run almost the same setup. 1521's for the street and xp10 front/xp8 rear for the track. I have run 3 days at COTA and 2 days at a smaller less demanding track. With this setup I should be able to get at least another 2-3 days at COTA before replacements will be needed. You can pick up a full set of replacement rotors for right at $400 on Amazon. Also, I do not run the cooling rings. As always, your mileage may vary.

EDIT: Track sessions are 25 minutes at COTA. There are two corners there where you are scrubbing close to 100 mph off.

Are you running anything beyond stock cooling?

Z06 grill only. But I also don't run here in the summer months. It's just to hot. My warmest track day was probably 75 degrees. I'm not Lewis Hamilton either. My average lap at COTA is 2:45-2:46, with the fastest at 2:42 on the stock MPSS.

Tires for spring and summer are stock MPSS, and late fall and winter tires are same size A/S 3s. My local track is Pacific Raceways in Kent,WA.

I would go XP12 front XP10 rear.
