You don't need to, it is built into the car. Turn to Track Mode, you will see a row of lights on top of the dash, as you build RPM's they begin to move towards the center, right before red line they start to blink (time to shift). And if you have HUD, they show up there in Track mode, or you can manually adjust the HUD to Track even if you are in Sport or Touring...

Thank you for that info, BTW I was aware of that feature. It is not a good shift light to do 1/4 mile passes with on a M7 or any manual trans.
I personally use the tach needle as it can be seen and understood in a split second rather than studying the dash looking for diff color lights and waiting till they start to blink with your foot to the floor banging shifts.
A specific bright shift light doesn't need to be watched so I can concentrate on shifts and keeping the car straight.

I want to know which wire to tap into for this as well..
I found a much better way, Holley Sniper makes an adjustible shift light that you just plug into the Diagnostic OBDII plug under the dash. You can program rpm light to launch, you can program each gear separate for when you want the shift light to come on in very fine RPM increments. Can be used virtually in any car and can just plug it in from one car to the next. I have one, its fantastic and bright. No more looking at the tach, just see the light and shift with out looking at the light.
Has anyone ever figured out what wires to tap into for a standalone shift light?
See my note below, holley sniper plug in shift light. Plus right into the diagnostic port under the dash. Can be used in any car 96 and newer. Each gear can be programmed separate to any rpm you want the light to flash. A fantastic little gem.

Many people already have things plugged in there. Such as DashLogics or Window Valets. This is a nice find, but doesn’t really answer “what wire do we use”.
I don't have any personal experience with this setup, but I did look into it as a way to set up a tachometer on an engine swap I was working on. Basically you clamp it around the low voltage trigger wire for the #1 cylinder ignition coil.
