Is there a way to disable it? It is absolutely annoying, I constantly try to avoid it, and i'm constantly clunking gears, and almost grinding gears when I try to force it (not really trying to force it hard, it's just that I have a heavy hand).
I know about a thingy that u can buy to disable it, but I don't want to spend money on this, and I don't want the hassle of installing it.
Search the forums and online for "C7 Corvette Stingray Skip Shift Eliminator CAGS"
Many of the forum vendors sell this product. $20 and your problems are over. Follow the installation instructions, there are 2 similar plugs on the trans where you need to hook it up.
Right now there is no other way than tuning it out. Most haven't taken that route due to warranty fears, but if you're in there anyway you might as well knock it out.
I will say, the skip shift lockout device only takes 5 minutes to install, and 4 of those minutes are used to lift the rear. It takes even less time if you have ramps or a garage bay. All in all its much cheaper than a tune (unless you have the tuning gear already).
In heavy traffic where you have slow moving cars in front of you, shift to second between 10 mph and 15 mph or shift to second after 19 mph. The engine can easily handle shifting to second at 10 mph. The other way to avoid skip shift is to use a heavier foot on the throttle. Skip shift only occurs when you are lazing around and not shifting properly. You can eliminate it for free, no need to spend any money.
If you happen to be in heavy traffic and shift in the 15 to 19 mph forbidden zone all you have to do is move the shifter from the entrance of the 4th gear gate to third and then back to second. This can be done quickly as you are coasting with traffic.
They don't explain it well in the C7 Owner's Manuals but they did in the C6 Owner's Manuals and from what I see it works exactly the same in the C5, C6 and C7. From the online C6 Owner's Manual:
One-to-Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on, you can only shift from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) instead of FIRST (1) to SECOND (2). You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn off
this feature. This helps you get the best possible fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a lower gear if you prefer. THIS IS WHERE I MENTIONED ONLY ENTERING THE GATE TO 4TH DON'T SHIFT ALL THE WAY INTO IT. WHEN YOU FEEL THE SHIFTER GOING TO 4TH JUST KEEP GOING BUT WHEN YOU HIT THE GATE REVERSE THE MOTION TOUCH THIRD, GO TO 2ND AND LET THE CLUTCH OUT. ALL OF THIS IS DONE WHILE YOU HAVE THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes on may damage the transmission. Shift only from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• the vehicle is going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• the vehicle 21 percent throttle or less.THIS USUALLY OCCURS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC
In the years of driving the GM 6/7-speeds ('04 GTO, '06 GTO, '09 G8 GXP, and '14 C7), my leisurely driving was 1-3-5-6. The 1-3 shift was the key, avoiding CAGS. My only need for 1-2 was for spirited driving. But I agree the CAGS engagement was disorienting and caused duress if not expecting it.
