Just had my 500 mile oil change at the dealer (strange feeling to have someone else change oil in my car... haven't done that for... ever??) and they did a good job. I checked the level after (oil at ~175 degrese, 7 minutes after shutdown and it was about midway on the hashes. Glad it was not topped out.
Out of curiosity I checked it cold later and there is no oil visible on the dipstick. From what I read when you do an oil change you drain the tank and the sump, and they say there will be a small amount in the sump. That implies that most is still in the tank. But I don't see any level in the tank when cold.
So to the question, does the tank totally drain to the sump after being shutdown for a time (how long)? I assume that if one does an oil change with the motor warmish (meaning it has run recently) most of the oil wil lbe in the tank. Just curious how the system behaves.
Yeah, I figured it was normal, but I am curious about the drain back rate and the "final" state (how much in tank, how much in sump, how much "elsewhere") it attains and how long it takes to reach that state.
