Default 502 engine install shift problems

Had no shift problems 1970 m21 prior to new 502 engine install. I picked the car up when completed and had problems putting the tranny in first gear....it required hard push rather than smooth throw....shifting to reverse was virtually impossible as it would grind gears b4 going into reverse. Towed back to the shop and they say the clutch spring came loose and that fixed the problem. I asked if it was still difficult to shift 1st and reverse. They stated it was but that was always a problem for corvettes...this is from a reputable speed shop....I couldn't believe that remark. I had the tranny dropped in April when I bought the car to make sure all was good and was told it was in great working order. I had no shift problems b4 the new engine install.....now the car won't shift correctly. When mating the new engine to the tranny, what possibilities could happen to create a shift problem.
