Just got her home from the dealer where I having some service done on my C7 - stopped on the way home to get gas and couldn't shift it into park. The service work i had done was no where near the shifter (airbag recall and media center replaced.... Put it into neutral to some gas ... tu get the starter switch to react... drove it home and in the garage again - no luck getting it into park - am i missing anything ? has anyone else experienced this in a C7 ?
I do not know how the C7 shifter is set up relative to other GM cars but at least one person had a similar but not identical problem on a Chevy SSR. Strangely, it happened after having the car serviced by a dealer. Looked like the dealer tech for some reason twisted the shifter **** and sheared a nylon rod that is part of the internal shifter mechanism and the broken piece prevented the shifter from locking in the park position. Other items to check are the mechanical connections of the shifter cable. Maybe something is loose, out of adjustment or just jammed. I'd recommend performing an external inspection for mechanical issues first.
Most transmissions are electrically linked with a solenoid to prevent starting in drive or reverse so until this is resolved you should be careful because if that system is impacted by the shifter not being in its "correct" position, you might end up starting the car and having it lurch forward or backward.
