Default OEM Airfilter mod

Hi guys,

First of all english is not my mother tongue so please excuse any errors on my part.
I didn´t want to spend a lot of money on a so called CAI with questionable performance gains and expectable lesser air filtration. So i came up with the idea to "enhance the airflow" of the original Airfilter
by getting rid of the plastic cage in it. I cut it lose at the upper end and then could take the rest of it in almost one piece out. The filter itself still seems as stable as before.

Looking forward reading your comments

Greetings from germany

I don't think the cage amounts to a flow restriction. The seal might, as does the paper. I'd recommend a "Green Filter", which I understand to be reasonable common/popular over in Europe.

If the paper becomes restrictive with age there's a chance your filter could collapse. Imagine that there are 100" of surface area, and you get a 2psi differential drop across the paper. That's 200lbs of crush force, which I'd guess is the reason they have that cage in there in the first place (though I do not know for sure).

At high flow rates, I suspect the paper elements will collapse together essentially ending or severely restricting air flow. The plastic cage was most likely put into the design to keep that from happening.

Without the plastic bracing I think the paper filter could be prone to collapsing. It's there for a reason.

I fully agree to the comments being made.
K&N as well as green filters are available in Europe for our Corvettes and if you want to gain a couple of horses with little money, that is the way to go.
Anything else will cost much more (in particular in Europe) and will not be legal in most cases and void your guarantee.

When the guarantee expires, I will most likely add a supercharger, that is a real performance gain, but also costs serious money.

Regards

Götz

Thank you for your feedback. At least nobody complained about my english
But think about that- if only this plastic cage is preventing the airfilter to collapse under "full throttle" the filter (same used in the Z06?) would be very very restrictive.
By the way the plastic seemed almost brittle and likely fell apart by looking at it
Never the less i´ll try to take a testdrive on the autobahn at the weekend to see if there is a performance loss because a lack of air and have a look at the filter if there are any marks of deformation.

GM seems to have optimized air filter performance, no gain replacing the OEM unit.

A car magazin tested a high flow air filter element vs the original filter, the gain was 9 or 10 hp.
Not much, but it comes cheap.
