Oil Change Sensor
Does the oil change sensor actually monitor the contamination level of the oil, or is it just a simple mileage-based reminder? I use Mobil 1 full synthetic, which should be good for at least 10,000 miles, but the sensor is telling me that I need an oil change after only 6,000 miles.

You're probably getting a reminder because it's been 1 year since your last oil change.
To my knowledge there's no sensor that monitors the condition of the oil.
However, the Oil Life Monitor does take into account how hard you drive the car, mileage, and length of time since the last oil change - and as I mentioned above it will zero out and tell you that an oil change is needed after 1 year, even if you have hardly driven the car.
From the Owner's Manual:
