Just wanted to ask... so now the car has 750 odd miles on it and I know I'm probably going to get scolded for this but I couldn't resist a couple of hard acceleration merges onto the highway.. and beyond the obvious adrenalin rush I got a couple of backfires back to back at higher rpm before you ask yes it's an 8 speed auto and I was not fooling with the paddles whatsoever, my last 2 cars were manual and I live in NYC so I just couldn't get another stick.
But are the backfires normal or should I be worried just looking for opinions and nothing goes in my tank except 93.
Also would be prudent to mention that when I took delivery the car had 8 miles on it.
Out of 8 pulls I got back fires twice, just me being paranoid ?
Not an issue on high rpm hard acceleration shifts, especially on the 1-2 shift. Some cars like Mini coopers alter their tuning in sport modes to try and recreate the effect. It's normal.
a backfire is combustion taking place in the intake manifold, hence "back"fire. if you are hearing popping sounds in the exhaust that is a result of late combustion from retarded spark possibly mixed with a retarded exhaust valve close event, both normal through heavy/wot throttle shifts.
the auto tune will pull timing (which means fire the spark plug later in the stroke) to cut power briefly for the shift and you are hearing the little brap noise, which is cool so enjoy it. Floor it all the time.
