Default Dash Cam--rear facing installation

Hi! I want to install a Qvia Ar790 2 channel dash cam in my 2016 z51.

Front install is easy.

Rear? I'm stumped on how to remove the hatch trim panels in order to get the wires through rubber grommet for a clean install.

It looks like I have to remove the painted roof portion as well.

Has anyone done this or know what/how I will need to remove?

Thanks!

I'd like to know this as well. I found a youtube video where an installer talks about how difficult it was to install the rear camera, but he does not go into detail on how it was done, skip to 1:40 on the video. Hopefully someone on the forums has mounted the rear camera on the rear window and can help out.

I've looked at this and best I can tell is the following:

1. Wire runs through grommet (red arrow)

2. Trim has to be removed (green arrow)

3. I'm less certain but I believe the entire plastic trim under the entire hatch door must be removed as well (yellow arrow)

4. Finally, less certain but believe the painted portion of the roof panel must also be unscrewed and removed (blue arrow)

for or this install it looks like they drilled the trim for the wire to come out of. I think I'll run mine from the top and place the cam where they've located. It'll only be an inch of wire exposed.

Anyone removed these before?

I just did this a few weeks ago. The piece with the green arrow simply pops off and is held by clips. You also have to remove the interior rear roof trim, which is also held in by clips and extends to the side pillars. Once those pieces are off, you can see a small path in the panel labeled with the blue arrow in the above pic. The rubber grommet is VERY tight and You would have to disassemble more of the roof halo which I did not want to do. I snuck the camera wire by the grommet on the front side of the car, then snaked it through the metal panel with a fish wire through the little cutout you can see in the picture. Slide some rubber wire protectant over the wire.

Attaching the wire to the camera on the back hatch was easier. You just take a small drill bit, and use it to file a small semicircular round opening on the side of the panel exiting to the hatch glass. Secure with zip ties.

I would have taken pics during my install, but didn't see many ppl interested in installing 2-ch dashcams at the time. Will try to take some pictures this weekend for you.

Just a thought: For $99 you could put a dedicated Rexring camera rear-facing and leave it on Recording Loop mode so you never have to worry about it unless something happens, then fetch the memory card. No wiring (except power) required.

Yeah, thought of that too before my install. Don't know the OP's camera model, but I bought a Blackvue 2-ch and it requires hookup to the front unit. The integrated app/GPS/wifi access swayed me from installing an independent unit. If you did install an independent one, you will end up doing pretty much the same wiring routing unless you are ok with a wire hanging from your hatch at all times.

I know this is an old thread. However I’d like to route my rear camera cable through the conduit. Does anyone actually know how this is done? I had both panels off but ran out of time. BlackVue did an install running through but there is no info on how they did it. I’ve messaged them with no response.

Figured out how to get the rear camera wire through the conduit with a bit of lube and some $8 fish tape. Very happy with the rear camera install. Now for the easy part 👍🏻
