I found a 2015 Z51 for potential purchase. The only thing is I dont like the black exhaust tips. Prefer chrome.
1- Why are they black? Was this part of an option?
I think somebody painted those black....not factory. And I don't think they are easily replaceable....they are welded to the pipe, which is welded to the muffler.

100% painted onto the chrome if these are true stock exhaust. If do some paint thinner are what you want to us to pull paint off but also not to damage the chrome on the stock pipes.
Plenty of us on here would love to have black exhaust tips! They turn black fairly quickly even if they're not painted (at least the outside ones). There is no factory option for black tips. They are all silver from the factory, although I think they're technically polished aluminum from the factory, not chrome. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
But to answer your question, it depends how they were "painted". If it's actually hi-temp paint there's a decent chance you can remove it. If they are quality ceramic-coated, there's no real way to remove the coating. The tips are welded onto the rest of the exhaust and you have to remove at least the lower valence to get the assembly off the car. So it's kind of a pain.
You might be better off buying someone's low mileage take off mufflers instead of trying to remove the paint. That way you could make it a simple remove and bolt on process.
I took my original Z06 mufflers off at around 700 miles to put the Corsa x pipe and axle back system on. They are just sitting in a box in my garage. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has original mufflers laying around.
OK. Just got off the phone with the dealer. The owner had them professionally painted to match the rims. Thing is I don't know the details on what the procedure was when painted.
So what kind of business can i call to gather more information about the possibility of removing this paint and what it will cost me.

Buddy get a rag put some paint thinner on it get under the car on the back side of what has been painted and just rub it just in a small spot to see how hard are easy it will come off. More than not if it has clear coat on it also will just need to rub it a little more to get it off.

That very well could be a Corsa axleback with the Polished black tips. We have a lot of low mile take-off C7/C7Z06 axlebacks. We actually just pulled a axleback off my friends '17 Z06 NPP less than 600mi. You can have them and just pay for the shipping and handling.
It will take a 2-3 hours to swap out.
Let me know!

Corsa offers polished black tips, they look awesome IMO.

Eddie, is there a way to cut off the OEM tips and weld the Corsa tips on, or do you need to buy the Corsa axle-back?
You would have to buy the Corsa axleback.
If you really wanted to, you could buy the tips and individually cut/weld the four tips on. The only reason I could see a purpose of investing the time and effort into that is to keep the NPP.
Thanks everyone. Did some further research. Checked with a detailed friend and also had the dealers paint department look at it. The black paint/powder coat can not be removed. The chrome under the black is already damaged from the painting process.
Hopefully this will serve someone in the future who may have the same issue.

I installed the Borla Pro xs and added the black tips. They look sick! My 2017 stingray is black.
Im actually the opposite I have borla exhaust and the tips are aluminum polish and i really want to get rid of those and add black tips wondering how can I make that happen 🤔
If they are factory pipes it’s stainless. Just sand the paint off and you’ll be good. Use a higher grit and they’ll be brushed just like they came. I painted mine black with high temp paint and never have to clean them!
I chose to paint mine black and that has worked well, but I appropriately prepped when surfaces when doing so. Hence, mine have been sanded and such. They would not look acceptable with simply removing the point, imho, needing considerable stainless refinishing not easily done on the car.

but it won’t come out as a professional job? I mean how can you get down there to pain all four tips evenly!!

I am considering doing this also...and am concerned about how to get even coverage considering the small spaces in between and around the tips...did you remove the rear bumper cover? maybe the bumper cover exhaust trim piece comes off???...I do not want flat black, rather a satin or even semi-gloss (any runs will show a heck of a lot more than flat black unfortunately)...
On my 17 GS, I just cleaned and painted the inside of the tips. Masked off outside and bumper, cleaned inside with mineral spirits and coated with high temp black. Looked good and way less time spent cleaning.
