Mileage is stored in both modules. As long as you get a new (or remanufactured) cluster, you should be good to go. The new cluster will inherit mileage from the BCM. You can't overwrite mileage in used clusters.

Really? So a new cluster will inherit the mileage from the BCM?

What happens if you replace a BCM and wind up with a dash with some mileage and yet a zero-mile BCM? Does the BCM then take the dash number? Or reset dash to 0? Or wait for dash to catch up?

I'll try to look up the detailed procedure later. But my understanding is a new cluster can update from an installed BCM, and a new BCM can update from an installed cluster. If you replace both modules, for example in a flood car, I don't know what happens. You may just have the put an odometer alteration label on the door jamb.

I looked up the odo procedure. There's an odometer quick reference document (07-08-49-020M). It's for all 2018 and prior GM vehicles.

For the 14-18 Corvette, the mileage is stored in the BCM, and programmed using SPS (service programming system). But it goes on to say that odometer programming is integrated with the BCM programming procedure.

So I looked up the BCM module replacement procedure. There's nothing specific to the odometer. Here's the high level steps.

1. In SPS programming, select Z1, immobilizer relearn to set up your key fobs.
2. In SPS, select K9 Body Control Module - Configuration & Setup. Follow the on screen instructions. Additional information may be shown on the driver information center.

Doesn't sound too bad. The cluster sounds about the same. Again, there's no specific mention of odometer programming.

1. In SPS, select P16 Instrument Cluster – Programming
2. In SPS, select P16 Instrument Cluster – Setup and configuration
3. In SPS, select P16 Instrument Cluster – USB file transfer

The USB transfer part is the same as how the HMI module is programmed. The files for the cluster are apparently huge, and they'd take forever to transfer through the diagnostic port. So you do normal programming to adapt the cluster to the configuration of the car, then download the main operating files to a USB drive and update it via the center console USB port.

Do yourself a favor and get a quality battery charger. Or at least hook up a fully charged battery jump pack. Turn off anything you're not using (headlights, HVAC, radio) and close the door. If your battery goes low while you're programming, you could cause some serious problems, like bricking a module. It took me ~35 minutes to program my radio module when I did my Android Auto upgrade. The documentation mentions reprogramming the fobs is 10-12 minutes. I'm glad I have a quality charger.

You're surfing where the big waves are. Good luck. Let me know if you've got any questions.

Have you confirmed what will happen ?

I had both defective ICP and BCM.

I have managed to program the BCM via SPS without the cluster connected. The BCM programmed with mileage set to 0 and I was able to add the key.

Now I have a used cluster with edited VIN/PIN and I wonder what will happen with the mileage. Will the ICP pull the mileage from the BCM and set it to 0 ?

Or will the BCM pull the mileage from the used cluster if I go through BCM programming again.

Does anyone know ?

Thanks
