I updated my Samsung S8 to Android 8 recently. Since the update I cannot get a GPS signal in Android Auto. The phone works just fine in my other cars that do not have Android Auto. It seems that what is happening is that when the Samsung screen turns off (as it does in Auto) the GPS is turning off. I installed an APP that is supposed to keep GPS locked on - but no joy.
Tried de-activating and re-activating the phone in Android Auto.
Anyone else had this issue? I'm guessing there is an incompatibility between Auto and Android 8
I have noticed in my 2017 GS the two apps I use (Waze and Google Maps) really struggles to get a good GPS signal on my Samsung J3. It seems to work much better in my other vehicles. I searched for this on the web but didn't find anything helpful.
So here is my #metoo that likely doesn't really help you either.
I had a similar problem with my Note 8 on Android 7.1.1. The battery was nearly dead, and I had turned on power saving mode. The GPS kept cutting out because of that. Once I turned off power saving, it went back to normal. I wonder if Android 8 turns some of that stuff on by default? Maybe check to see if you can exempt Android Auto from any power savings, or see if you can turn off power saving completely while the phone is plugged in.

You're a genius Jeff. Shutting off power saving mode solved the problem. Even though I had Android Auto set to "Unmonitored / Unlimited" - Oreo still shuts down GPS when the screen is off with "Mid" level Power Saving mode.
They have obviously changed the behaviour in Oreo to be more aggressive relative to Android Nougat.
Hopefully others will also benefit from this thread.
That's cool. I'm glad you got it working. I actually just got the upgrade prompt for my phone tonight. At least now I know how to fix it right out of the gate. I'll probably wait until the weekend though. I need my phone to be solid for work.
