Default Blown Piston on Dyno Tune......

Hey Guys,

I have a 2015 C7. I recently put a Corsa Xtreme Exhaust on. Put a Vararam CAI on. And just had a set of ARH Long Tube headers installed on Monday. Brought the car to the dyno to be tuned. First pull the car put down 439 at the wheel. Car was running a little rich. Tuner made adjustments to lean it out. Did the second pull. Car put down 423 at the wheel. There was a mis-fire on cylinder 6. After investigating the issue. Found a piston blew and needed to replace the piston in cylinder 6.

Has anyone heard of anything like this happening? Do you think it was the tuners fault?

Car only has 15k miles on it. Never had any issues prior to the tune. And have seen the LT1’s take way more HP than 436 before even thinking of forging pistons. Looking for any input here. Thanks in advance!

Jim

Maybe the tune was leaned out a little too much due to tuner error.

You need to post pictures of said piston, head, head gasket and cylinder wall.

Sorry to hear it, but from my decades of blowing up parts on dynos and on the Salt Flats I'd say that you may never know what happened, but without looking at the pieces you sure won't. Welcome to the world of enhanced performance. S**t happens. I try to always tell anyone chasing more power no matter in what or by what means, there are always risks.

Here's but a small sample of what I'm talking about,

Seems odd to me that those mods made the AFR rich........... typically, they go the other way. I suspect that a sensor they used to measure AFR was out of calibration.

It would take a lot to do that kind of damage to a mild bolt on car. Interested to see the damage

I agree with Bill here. Would like to see the run & chart on this pull. Plus what was the RPM did it happen at on the dyno. Robert

Sometimes parts fail. If it was missing it could have been any number of things. Perhaps the injector was firing intermittently and leaned out the cylinder causing the scatter?

The only picture of the chart I have is this I snap shot off a video I took of the pull. The mis-fire happened later in the day, and I had left before finding out the cause of the mis-fire. I will post pictures of the damaged parts once I get back to the shop.

This is the reason I don’t believe it’s worth tuning a car and throwing out the warranty for 50hp. Things like this can happen and in the end the cost is far more than the benefit. It’s possible the tune had an effect but hard to prove. This is a great time to forge the bottom end and make some real power though.

And to get approval for warranty work the dealer will have to pull the ECU and send it to GM, where they will immediately know what was done.
