The automatic is faster by far, but a lot of geezers still think rowing their own box proves something, so they struggle along. Too bad the A8 also overheats during track use, which is why Mick correctly says "Manual only". So if you want to absolutely tear the place up for 4 laps, A8 is the only way to go. If you plan to do it all day, M7.

Manuals are also more dangerous at the track, since at some corner (exit)s, a big crash is usually one ill-timed mis-shift away.
That said, the challenge and the excitement is often more important than the absolute best lap times. In other words, it will be quicker to get bored with an auto.
In the end of the day, I think I'd still prefer the manual transmission. Once we switch to electric track cars, it will likely go away, anyway, so we might as well enjoy it while they're still available : )
