Active exhaust question

I was wondering if it's worth it to do an aftermarket exhaust that uses the factory butterfly valves? Seems to me it would kinda be defeating the purpose being it would be necking down at that point, plus I know the stock exhaust is supposed to be pretty good anyway. I'm sure gains are minuscule but if I'm paying 2 to 4 thousand dollars I would like to get everything I can out if it. I was really thinking long tubes with the factory exhaust would be the way to go. Thanks
