Looking at a one owner '17 GS with 18K on odometer. The first oil change on Carfax is listed at 5,500 miles. Should I assume the previous owner had it changed at the recommended 500 miles or sooner than 5,550? I have asked the dealership to contact the previous owner for more information. The car is immaculate. It was traded in on a Z06. Should I even worry about it?
If the owner had the free 500 mile oil change done it should show in the GMVIS maintenance records. Does CarFax show an oil change since the one at 5500 miles. Depending on how the person drives 5500 miles is about how many miles you get before the OLM drops to zero. If the car is driven on the highway a lot then an owner could see more miles. However, if you don't drive the car at all the OLM will drop to zero over a year's period as GM requires and oil change at least once per year.
If the 500 mile change wasn't done and the engine has survived to this point I doubt there is an issue. GM didn't originally require the 500 mile oil change until after they had some engine failures in the 14s. They found the failures were related to a contamination issue in some of the dry sump cars and that changing the oil at 500 miles avoided the problem. However, there are plenty of 14 Z51 cars that are on the road today that were built before the 500 mile requirement and are going strong and didn't receive their first oil change until 4K to 5K miles were on the engine. I know some of those owners.

Caution! Do not assume any maintenance with a high performance used sports car that is not documented? The consequences can be very expensive and a waste of your time.
Mr. Tadge Juechter goes into great deal about oil, and the contaminants that are present in motor oil, especially when a new engine is breaking in! Moreover, A 2017 GS is a dry sump, thus, creates additional maintenance requirements that are out-side a regular wet sump LT1 engine!.
