Hi guys. Just bought a 2014 coupe with m7 that came with only 1 key. Called a dealer here in Houston and they'll want $195 but they have to get the key cut by gm based on vin. They can't do it locally for my year. Is there something special about the 2014s. Can I not find a key and have it locally cut?

It's the emergency key in the base of the fob that has to be cut. I believe you can get any ole fob from ebay for $60 but the emergency key won't work in your car. Not sure if it's something special for 2014 but the key is funny shaped and can't be cut by a regular key making machine.
OK thanks. I went to my local locksmith. He says he has the fobs and can cut the emergency key for $315. So the dealer might be the way to go. But I also just found a place that will cut the emergency key for $13 but I have to get the key code from the dealer. I will probably try that route first.

There are 4 different fobs - Manual/coupe, manual/vert, auto/coupe, and auto/vert. You'll need to get the correct one. I bought an extra fob and key from my dealer - decent discounted price and no issue with getting the key laser cut at the parts depot.
You will need to show proof of ownership and VIN before they will cut the key.
Thanks Ron. Do you have a early 14? I am aware on the different keys. I was just puzzled when I called the parts Dept at my local dealer and he said my car key can only be cut by GM and not them. He did tell me I need to come in and show ownership which is no problem.

My 2014 was built April 15th. Apparently most Chevy dealers don't have the equipment to cut the keys. Some Cadillac dealers do. My key was apparently cut at the parts depot. I suggest you call a couple Chevy dealer parts departments and check price for fob and cut key. You may be surprised.
I believe I showed registration and my driver's license.
When you get the new FOB, you will need to program it to your car. If you just add it to the car. it will become FOB #3 and not have the memory functions that FOBs 1 & 2 have. That means one programmed for a tall person and one programmed for a short person won't happen with 1 & 3. You need 1 & 2 to do that.
Program the FOBs with this link. USE THE LONG program instructions to get 1 & 2 for your car.
