Putting my car back closer to stock. I'm putting in a freshly rebuilt Lt1. When installing a new oil pump on a fresh engine, how do you align the oil pump correctly?
I thought the alignment tool was just to mark where it was before removal? With everything being new, I can't tell where it was before.
This is correct. The factory manual doesn’t talk about aligning it any special way unless reusing the old pump.

Yes, I worked with a forum member about a year ago to provide measurements of the real tool so he could make some 3D printed ones. Theres no reason they should not work as long as you use them correctly.
Loosely install the pump with the front cover off and slide the inner and outer gears into the pump then place the feeler gauges around the perimeter of the outer gear, then torque the oil pump to spec.
If you want to get really fancy you can shim the inner gear too.
This is the method in video form for ls stuff, but lt should work the same.
