Default 5,480 Miles - Disgusting

Preparing to take a 2000 mile road trip to the 25th NCM Anniversary celebration and decided to check the quality of my clutch fluid after 1 year and 5480 miles. It was black and the cap had a gray deposit that looked like moisture interaction with the fluid. Having used the Ranger method on my 2008 Z06 I did the same to my 2019 GS today.

First fluid extraction, totally black.

After two bottles of Prestone DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid it all looked so much better!

I bought a use C6 48,000 miles two years ago. I do the ranger method at least monthly sometime more often. Now at 77,000 miles when I do the change my fluid looks almost clear. It is an overkill but fluid is cheap.

With the clutch fluid, you use a syringe or a turkey baster & suck out all of the fluid in the reservoir, put in new fluid, pump the clutch pedal 20-30 times & check the fluid in the reservoir to see what color it is, repeat this procedure until the fluid is clean

I have a bit over 5k miles on my GS and I track the car. The clutch fluid was and still very clean. I did the ranger method anyway and I used 1/2 a bottle.

There are many videos out there demonstrating it. Just be very careful not to get any fluid on your paint.

I suspect the cap does not seal well and allows some moisture in. My C6Z was the same way at 5K miles - fluid black. However, it seemed like I had less problem each year I changed the fluid. On the 10th year I flushed the system the same way but used maybe 1/2 bottle. Glad you are not having this problem. Maybe you have great seal on your cap. Who knows? These great cars are all a bit different.

Is clutch fluid something you are supposed to check and change while warm, like the oil change?

Nope. In fact you don't even need to have the engine running to swap out the fluid, just pump the pedal.

No not to my knowledge. GM actually recommends you not remove the cap in fear of allowing moisture into the system. However, based on experience of other owners having issues with clutch pedal sticking to the floor and etc. I adopted the Ranger method of extracting and replacing my fluid on an annual basis. Figure it has saved me some expensive or inconvenient repairs. Drove my '08 Z06 to 64,400 miles with no clutch issues.
