Finally got the car rear bumper installed with the back-up camera. The LCD display works during a reverse operation, but otherwise the screen is black. The radio controls do not work. Could the HMI be the problem?
Could be. My HMI unit was glitchy - it worked like 95% of the time and sometimes just went black with no audio.
Double check all the connectors going into the unit. I noticed mine were a bit lose, so I pressed them in tighter and since that the unit hasn't blacked out. The HMI module is mounted to the driver's side kick panel up alongside the dash. The wires going into to the unit touch the hood release cables.
Thanks for the great suggestion, unfortunately it did not fix my problem. I unconnected and reconnected all the fittings. The back-up camera does work on the LCD screen, but nothing else works.
Also, all the climate control buttons are functional.
The normal list of dealer provided solutions are:
1) the screen itself
2) wiring at the module
3) frayed blue wires at the screen
4) software update
5) the HMI module itself
Since your reverse cam is working I would rule out #1 and #3 - you already checked #2 so it might time for a dealer visit for #4 which could lead to #5.
Good luck and report back this way others might be able to troubleshoot themselves down the road.
Finally got the car to the local dealer. They explained that the problem is the radio amplifier, not the HMI. They said that when they powered up an amplifier, the LCD display worked. They also told me that the amplifier replacement would be a warranty item.

Huh ...well as long as they fix it for free I guess you can't complain.
However I don't get the correlation: (in basic terms) the amplifier is connected to the radio module, the radio module is connected to the HMI, the HMI is connected to the display. So its a far stretch to say a bad amplifier could take out the display. Maybe some kind of grounding problem or communication bus issue I don't have a full wiring diagram but thier answer doesn't pass the sniff test to me.
Just got the car back from the dealer and the LCD screen is now working!
This is the documentation that I received from the dealer:
Display in radio only comes on when in reverse not showing anything else
U0186, U0028, U0229-00 Found can not communicate with T3 amplifier. Check power, ground and wake up all good - bad amp
replaced amp and programmed
Part number 84503123, Amplifier 9.650
This just proves the point that the Corvette is nothing more than a computer with an engine wrapped around it!
