When you change your cam, at what hp level should you use the lockout over limiter? I’ve got a z06 and wondering if my speed shop should have put in a lockout over limiter. Last dyno on a 15% overdriven, btr stage 2 cam, 2” long tube, meth, cold air, heat exchanger, expansion tank, ported throttle body and it only put down 680 on a mustang dyno.
A cam phase limiter/lockout is not required at a certain HP level, Its needed to accommodate more aggressive cam profiles. It limits or locks out VVT for valve clearance.
A BTR Stage 2 cam should almost be completely limited. Locking it out completely would also work.
I don't think peak HP would be affected with a complete lockout you might just loose a little low- mid range power.
BTW: 660 -680whp is about what I would expect out of your setup with a safe tune on pump gas.
Why do you think its low?
Thanks for your help. I was told by one speedshop that the phase limiter was hurting the max potential of the cam. They said they have seen the oil pressure roll the cam back on a number of their builds and that reduces the amount of available power possible with this cam. Thoughts?
Also with this cam and limiter I get a weird surging at cruising RPMs. Randomly between 1800 and 2200 I get surging which makes it awkward for what gear to cruise in. I was under the impression lockout cams usually would surge at lower rpms only? I may want to lockout my cam if that’s the case to get drivability back while cruising.
