Default Wrong temperature reading plz help

The engine temperature gauge on my 2014 c7 Z51 randomly climbs higher than normal and keeps climbing till I get a message saying "idle engine". This includes the digital reading going past normal aswell, however engine does not seem hot at all and if I immediately reconnect the battery temperature returns to normal and the problem is gone for 1-2 days. This happened twice this week and I daily drive the car with no issues. Could this be a bad temperature sensor? And if not, what could be the issue?

Nope, you need a new fan and controller. 14's have the problem

When the temp spikes, just pull over, turn off the engine, open the door to kill the RAP, then restart the engine. See if your fan doesn't come on screaming to cool down the temp.

If this is not the case, then we can chat some more.

It does come on screaming but how to permanently fix the issue? Just replacing the fan and controller will get rid of it?

If your sysmptoms are as described, then yes. I swapped out my fan in the garage in less than an hour. I think it is post 29 in the thread I linked.

From what I understand in reading all these overheating 2014 threads, the problem is the programming of the fan controller, not specifically the fan. The unfortunate part, from what I read, is the newer Z06 fan controller can't be had on its own. I wonder if one were taken from a wrecked donor car, could it be swapped into the stock 2014 fan and fix the problem? Until the time that someone finds this out, the only fix is to update to the Z06 fan and controller, as Elmer and many others have done. Its not terribly expensive and only take an hour or so to do. On the plus side besides actually fixing the problem, you get a more powerful fan in the deal, so its a bit of an upgrade as well as a fix!

The controller and fan are one unit. The controller is actually located in the fan plug to the electrical system of the car. You can't get the controller all by itself and install it on the existing fan.

Easy swap on my 2014 Z51. I got my 2015 Z06 600W radiator fan from RockAuto.com and it was direct-fit. I just checked and it's currently $195, plus you can Google search for for 5% off promo code.
