Default Thermostat Question

What is the open value of the stock LT1 thermostat? Sometimes I think mine is running a little too cool. It is a 2017 Z51 with a M7 transmission and many times it runs at 175 deg. For example today is mid 80’s here in Florida and running up the interstate at 75 mph or so it was at 175. I don’t think the thermostat is stuck open as the car warms up quickly. Once I got off of the highway into traffic the car ran at just under 190. BTW I did a few searches and did not find an answer to this question, if I missed it sorry.
Thanks

Stock should be 190 stat I believe. Mine used to run 190 and would rise up closer to 200+ in stop & stop Florida Inferno traffic and 10 minutes stop lights with the stock stat. You the original owner? Maybe someone swapped the stat? But even if someone swapped the stat, it would eventually rise to 190 or higher as that is when the stock tune turns on the fans.

I later changed mine to a 170 stat bulb, and added a Dewitt's plug and play radiator and a Dewitts fan and now it runs 168 running up the interstate here in the Florida Inferno. Goes up to 172 in traffic now. Briefly goes towards 180 on occasions.

I am the original owner and nothing has been changed. In the summer here in Treasure Coast on the interstate it will run about 185 now about 175. Wonder if it should be changed just incase it is beginning to stick some. Better to stick open but not good to stick. Thanks

Even if its stuck open , it will NOT make the engine run cooler , it would just take it longer to reach tempature

Something else is going on

That was my first thought as well. However, the Z51 with the extra radiator has so much cooling capacity I was thinking that at a nice cruse perhaps it would run cool enough to need it to close now and then. Once off highway and in stop and go or running harder it does run hotter.

Very odd, it warms right up? The car would take a while to warm up if the stat were stuck open.

I hate trowing parts at it, but that stat is easy.

Two bolts to remove the stat. Just take off the MAF harness to get at it. Easy enough to replace. Top off the coolant and make sure you burp it a couple of times. It will get hot until it burps itself. Usually takes a few hot/cool cycles. Fill with Dexicool. Make sure you get a GM OEM stat if you are sticking with a 190. Parts stores cheapies have a rubber gasket that will fail eventually. The Katech stat is supposed to be the go to one now if you are going aftermarket and want a different temp. I know I have seen threads with lots of pictures so do a google search for it.

It sounds like it is opening and then not closing. That happened to me too. Randomly it would warm up to 180 ish (180 tstat) then cool down to 160ish. Changed tstat. All good.

This is incorrect. A thermostat that is stuck open will make the car run cooler since it is not opening and closing repeatedly to regulate temperature. What you said is only true if the thermostat was already fully open but the oem tstat is not full open until about 215°F

OP it sounds like your stock 194 tstat is opening, then sticking open. The reason it warms back up in slow speed is because your fan isn't running until 200 ish so it is not getting airflow.

I think it is stuck open, or it just doesn't shut back once it opens. In any case, just get the OEM replacement, and get'er fixed! It's cheap : )
