To clarify for others here. Ignition is not cut on shifts, it is actually reduced based on the torque model and many other things. Some gears it retards timing during the shift more than others and those gear changes will produce a louder "pop". What is happening is the engine is still ingesting fuel and air but the ignition event is greatly retarded so a few of the combustion events happen as the exhaust valves are open, thus the noise you hear. It sounds great and reduces stress on the transmission during shift events.
