I had an exhaust valve break on my 2014 z51. Been told it's common just like the ls7 engines,I don't see many post on here about them. I see a ton on the C6 Z06 section.
I don't think it has been seen all that often. Unlike the LS7 valve issue where we actually saw a number of exhaust valve heads break off and lunch the engine (happened to mine at 6800 rpm in third gear) which was followed by a long (a couple of years) investigation that resulted in a mass reaction of fixing supposedly loose valve guides to prevent the problem. The LS7 heads had a number of exhaust valves break (including my engine I personally knew of 9 engines having the same failure at the track) and there used to be a list of a hundred or so forum members who experienced valve drops, however, many thousands more heads were fixed whether they needed to be or not. Nobody knew for sure whether the recommended fixes would actually prevent the issue and nobody paid any real attention to how long the fixed heads lasted.
I had an intake valve spring break at around 25k miles (LT1) ... luckily no other damage. I ended up replacing all the springs with new factory springs, and I upgraded the pushrods, but that's all.
Brkn exhaust valve at 36000 miles and another at 62000 miles. Second one dropped into the cylinder.
Like Dcasole, I'll be changing the valves on the new engine at 30000 miles/3 years.
I do track my car 2 or 3 times a year, but drive like an old lady most of the time on the street.
Both brkn valves occurred in normal highway driving in 5th or 6th gear at under 2500 rpms.
So is the valve springs that are breaking allowing the valve to do damage or is it the actual valve stem? I assume it is the springs.. And did GM change the valve springs along the way on the C7s?

it's the springs for the most part , if u are lucky u are not going fast and the car starts to run like crap and then stalls, tow to dealer replace spring and u are on your way or If you are like me , u are driving 70 mph the spring breaks , the valve keeper then let's loose and the valve drops into the motor , intant carnage ....
No GM did not change valve springs , there are even reports of the C8 breaking springs.... it just a fact of life when you drive a car with an aggressive cam profile ....
You can't live your life worrying if the springs will break , for every one of us who have had an issue there are a 1,000 who have had no issue . Just drive your car and enjoy

it’s the valve spring breaking then causes carnage to the piston if the valve isn’t in time and hits the piston.
I plan on replacing all of my valve springs with GM OEM blue stripe springs. My current ones have a yellow stripe. What’s the difference? No clue. I’ll also be replacing all the keepers and retainers at once after I replace the broken one, it’s like $250 to replace all of them for parts. Don’t waste your time buying the springs at the dealer unless you love wasting money, buy at an online GM OEM part retailer.
