Air filter housing

What purpose/function does the "rectangular box" on the right side of the air filter housing serve? The GM engineers have this designed for a good reason. I'm just curious. Thank you for any replies.

I think he is talking about the Helmsholtz resonator on the air intake.Supposed to help with noise reduction in the intake system.

Yup. Years ago I discovered that MFG put "mufflers" in odd places, including, of all things, AC lines. Found that out in my AC class in college.
