I'm in South Carolina, but I don't mind some travelling, especially with your recommendation of that specific shop. I will give them a call. Thank you!

Where in SC ???…do you have a DVOM ??…if so when the car is acting up you can look at the CAN high and low voltages…you should see approximately 2.5 volts at pins 6 and 14 at the DLC (where you hook up your scan tool to)…also you should see 60 ohms reading across pins 6 and 14…best to do this with the battery disconnected…a video to see what’s involved with this type of diagnosis…dealerships do not have the equipment or skill set to handle these issues !!
I'm in the upstate, not too far from Greenville. I do have a dvom, and I can check those readings now, but to catch it in the act, I'll have to hit a track.
In case it got lost in the conversation above, a typical gds2 scan after this happens can be found here (you may need to download the file and then open it to view it correctly).
Sorry, I’m in Southwest Florida so I don’t know when I’ll be getting my Internet back to download and view your file…if you are seeing just “no comms” there isn’t really much more to do than first checking the things I mentioned when the car is acting up.
I hate to just throw more parts at it but I am thinking one of the speed sensors. That fits all the symptoms except the power steering. The are cheap and easy to change. In the process inspect the sensor harnesses carefully including the connector pins.
OP: Did you ever install the power steering cooling duct? I don't know if overheating of the PS motor will cause the other issues you have had but it wouldn't hurt to install it since it is an issue that GM recognizes as an on-track problem.

With the battery disconnected, across pins 6 and 14, I saw ~60.4 Ohms.
With the car running or in accessory, I saw ~2.8V on 6 and ~2.2 on 14.
Edit: Corrected the voltages when I realized I _was_ having a bonehead moment and was measuring voltage differential instead of to ground (pin 4).
