Default GM Customer Service

Took my Stingray in to the dealer because its grinding going into 2nd gear and they said there was nothing wrong with it. I know better and wouldn't want my new Corvette torn into because nothing was wrong with it. Got the GM customer service number of 800-462-8782. Anyone have anything to do with something like this? Is this the way to go about it right?

Thx

Common issue with the M7. Big synchros and a sloppy shifter cause this. So it feels like it grinds slightly when going into 2nd and affects all Tremec manual transmissions in Camaros, Challengers, etc also. Don’t take my word for it, check the other 100 posts on this forum.

Try replacing your transmission fluid, it helped my M7 quite a bit. This is an easy and low-cost DIY. I used Redline D4 ATF (yes ATF) 1-gallon jug. Look it up on here, there are a couple of stickys. I can feel it, mine will need to be changed again by autumn.

I understand that the MGW shifter swap also helps a great deal—I may go that route in the autumn also.

Best of luck & Save the wave,
Kangarew

Thanks, good information. I'll try the ATF myself

Hey, I forgot to mention that this issue is more pronounced when the transmission is cold. Once it warms up, it doesn’t go away completely, but it grinds a lot less!

The issue is internal to the transmission and the Tremec transmissions used in the C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes have been that way since day 1 of C5 production 24 years ago. Usually, you will get a little nibble of the gears when the transmission is cold but after driving a mile or so it usually goes away.

Not sure what changing the shifter will do for an internal condition. The shifter plugs into a socket in the transmission control rod which is a curved rod that runs along the top of the torque tube and attaches to the transmission shift control shaft at the front of the transmission. All the shifter does is move the control rod back and forth and twists it sideways. All tolerances are in the shift ball/socket connection to the control rod, the control rod connection to the transmission shift shaft, and whatever tolerances there are inside the transmission with all of the gears sliding back and forth on different shafts. The shifter doesn't control how the gears slide relative to each other on the shafts inside the transmission nor how the synchronizers do their job.

Thank you for this. We see post after post about improved shifting after changing out the shifter for example. But technically the shifting hasn't improved at all... what has improved is the feel or effort required to move the rod. Thus your only changing half of the equation, granted its the half you physically interact with, but the syncros / gear mesh / rods, etc don't change at all.

There's been some good advice below. I figured as a somewhat related FYI to your question I would submit a reply. The gm customer service 800 number is a waste of time unfortunately. Most manufactures have a good assistance program but the GM one absolutely sucks. Just had some very long and extremely frustrating calls with them. The case handler had less brain cells than the keyboard I'm currently typing this on. I wish this board still had someone on it from chevy to talk to. I ended up having to go to the BBB.

A common 2nd-gear issue with many, not just Tremec by any means. Each has something of a unique learning-curve, as well, to minimize the issue.

Just imagine, Avanti, growing up in the 60's and 70's driving big blocks, small blocks, chevy, fords, 442's with 4 speeds, and I still have to learn how to drive each standard car I get into now.
Moving on..............
Has Tremec been contacted about this by anyone that you know of that is on this forum? Will the Redlne D4 ATF void the warranty?
Thanks to everyone for their replies, really appreciate it.
