Second post here on the forum with the first one being an intro post. I have a question regarding the transmission. First off this is our first ownership of a vette but I've been a lifelong fan, I also do as much of my own work as possible on our vehicles. I know the tranny sits pretty much right behind the seats in the C7. While driving it or sitting in the passenger seat I notice a "whirring" sounds for lack of a better term coming from the area behind the seats. It does NOT sync with the speed or rpms from what I can tell. It just seems kind of constant with a little bit of variability, my assumption is it is coming from the tranny. The question is...
Is this normal?
What is making the sound?
Thanks for the input guys. After driving last night I noticed you are able to hear it when you are cruising at low RPMs because at that point the motor is practically idling and the exhaust is quiet even in Sport mode. When you are above 2k RPMS it becomes harder to hear due to exhaust and engine noise. While the noise does not sync with the RPMs or MPHs is does vary with speed. At times it is like a whir and at other times it is like a faint whistle and then at times it's both together. It doesn't sounds like a traditional front wheel drive bearing when it starts to fail but then again this isn't a traditional front wheel drive car... lol. Any info on that TSB would be appreciated, I'll do some digging on my own as well.
Side note... tried out launch control last night. The Mrs. was in the passenger seat and looked at me afterward and said "What the hell was that?!?!" LOL
OK I have an update with some new information. We went for a nice long drive today and I really paid attention to the noise. To start with the noise (whine, whirring) is heard by everyone who has been in the car and it is a tick louder when sitting in the driver's seat. The noise starts to appear at around 38 MPH and lasts to around 50 MPH and during that time it gets slightly louder and higher pitched then around 50 you can BARELY hear it because road noise drowns it out. Def going to be talking to dealer and my friend who was a vette mechanic. Also I did look on YT but couldn't find any vids about the TSB or any vids with my problem.
This is a rear wheel bearing I have experienced these exact symptoms on a c5 and c6 as well as a c7.
Yeah that's what I keep coming around to as well. I just purchased it from the dealer 2 weeks ago and also got an extended warranty and the dealer is solid AND has a certified master vette tech on staff. I hear it's about a 2 hour job and pretty straight forward.
The official word from the Vette Tech at the dealer is bad wheel bearing and pretty bad at that. They ordered a new hub and are installing it today. I was a little concerned at a wheel bearing failure are 22k miles but my buddy who used to work on C6 and C7 vettes a loty said he wouldn't stress over it. He said chalk it up to a bad part and don't worry on it.
