I've conversed with an individual on this forum who has removed the driver side fuel tank without removing the drivetrain or rear cradle.
I've put my car on my lift and removed the rear wheel and fender liner. I believe from what I've learned this is possible.
I've taken a photo of the top of my fuel pump and it shows clear evidence visually of leaking.
I hope it doesn't come to me fixing it myself, but I'm fairly confident now I'll be able to if I need to and if that is the case I will document the process.
Now that I'd like to see since I'm currently caging a 2019 GS and need to remove the tanks. Had to remove the tanks on the previous 4 C7's we caged.
What I've been told is that the crossover tube is tool less. There is a pinch clamp you release easily with your fingers. The crossover tube is held in a retainer by 1 10mm nut above the transmission.
Once that nut is removed there is enough movement in the crossover that when you release the pinch clamp with your hand the crossover tube will pull out far enough to clear the tank.
I got under my car and was able to get my hand on the pinch clamp and pinch it. It's remarkably easy. If you look at photos of fuel tanks and crossover pipes on the auction website you will get a good understanding of how it works.
I'm guessing you've even seen them up close in person and already understand.
The other connections can all be un-done through the wheel well with the liner removed. There are a couple things to remove/relocate like the parking brake actuator and a module and you can reach in and disconnect the fuel lines and power to the fuel pump. Also disconnect the fuel filler.
After all that, remove the skid plate, the reinforcement bar for the rear subframe and it looks like the tank will drop out.
Correct, but to get the tube out of the tank, it needs to bow/flex/bend downwards towards the trans and there is not enough room to flex it enough to remove it from the tank. C6's are also tool less, but the cradle/trans/diff/suspension just needs to be lowered, not removed. I was just following the shop manual procedure but if the tanks can be removed without removing the drivetrain, I'm all up for hearing about how it is done. The GS will be out of the paint booth tomorrow and then I go about reinstalling the tanks.

My understanding is that with the center bracket that holds the crossover tube to the car above the transmission removed (1 10mm nut) the tube will deflect enough to get the snout out of the tank.
Hi , i know that this post is a bit old, but I need to remove the tank from the passenger side, maybe you can help with some advice on how you managed to do it?
Not sure about the passenger side, but in my case I was able to get the dealer to do the drivers side tank without disturbing the drivetrain. They removed the rear facia and a muffler to get the access they needed. I was told it requires the mechanic to have longer thinner arms.
If it weren't a warranty repair I would of done it myself and I'd know more. I wasn't going to argue with free.

Thanks for your answer, We have already removed all the rear, the suspension, muffler, and we have lowered a bit all the trans and drivetrain but still, it looks near impossible to get there with a hand, I am afraid that if we manage to open and remove the crossover tube I won't be able to put it back .
