Default Cradle swap?

Anyone ever completely drop the cradle/front subframe? If so I assume engine needs supported in some manner. Best method anyone has come up to do this? I do not have a lift but I do have a pit to help facilitate this. Reason for doing it is repairing a front hit and cradle got smacked pretty good.

You need something like this...

1000 lb. Capacity Engine Support Bar (harborfreight.com)

I swapped the cradle with a jack under the oil pan with a block of wood. I also unbolted the lower control arms . Wasn't that bad. Maybe you should find a spot to put a jack stand for safety. Possibly on the torque tube.

Okay that was my first idea to support it with a block of wood under oil pan. I’m swapping the entire subframe including a-arms, shocks, steering, knuckles etc so should be pretty straight forward.

We used similar to the HF tool for years at the Lexus dealers I worked at but....there was steel body structure just under the edges of the hood for the support to sit on. I have not looked at my Stingray to figure if it would there.

there isn’t. They use something similar at the dealer but they have long legs that extend down and sit om
the “frame rails” and bolt to the side of the engine. You can google pics. Some people make their own too

I'd use an engine hoist.

I have one of those as well, haven’t identified a great lifting point as of yet inside the bay but if need be I’ll figure something out. Waiting on a new balancer before I start this project, might as well fix that before I put a bunch of stuff in the way.

You could remove the headers and use some header bolt holes, or remove your intake manifold and get one of the valley plate engine lift plates (which is what I use).

This is what the dealer uses to support the engine when the frame needs work:

I imagine the official tool costs an arm and a leg. However, you could probably make a home made set up that would do the same thing. I don't think I would want an engine hoist holding the engine while I was under the car working on it. There is always too much of a chance of a hydraulic failure letting it drop on you.

I've got the Harbor Freight version of that cross bar. I don't think the legs are long enough to reach the frame rails. It might not be too hard to get longer legs made though.

I successfully pulled the old cradle today. Working over a pit. Lifted the car and supported in jack stands. Supported the engine at the bell housing where the thick aluminum is with an additional rubber padded jack stand. Worked well, hope to get the replacement back in the car tomorrow. Used a 20 ton high lift air over hydraulic jack that I normally use to lift our self propelled sprayer on the farm to support the cradle and to lower it down slowly while looking for connections I needed to free up, absolute over kill but just using what I have. Lining up the engine mounts may prove fun on the way back in but pretty sure I can get it, might use a transmission jack instead just for the the ability to make small adjustments.

Sounds like you've got it well in hand. Good luck with the reinstall.
