Default A8 trans fluid temperatures

My '19 base Stingray (17K miles) trans fluid has never come close to 200F, no matter what the ambient temps are or how hard I drive. The gauge reads 8-10 degrees below the oil and coolant whenever I check from a cold start. While the oil/coolant each reach normal temps in the 180-190F range after ~ 10 minutes, the trans takes at least 30 minutes to get to 150 in town with normal traffic. Out on the highway at 70-80 mph, it'll actually go down to as low as 100 on a 70 degree day.

My C6 needed a larger cooler to stay below 200 in town, but would drop to the 170 range on the highway, due to the better airflow.

I'm starting to be concerned about extra wear or a bad sensor, since the standards for trans fluid temps are in the 170-190 range.
Anyone else have this condition or are you all in the desirable range?

My 17 A8 rarely gets above ~140 driving in town.
Remember that the oil cooler is mounted outside of the radiator (air cooled) unlike many other cars that install the cooler inside. When installed inside the ATF temp will be closer to water temp.
This is the reasons that the A8 was easily contaminated with moisture requiring the new Blue label Mobil 1 ATF fluid, (there were other reasons too) lower overall ATF fluid temps not allowing condensation to boil off.

Has a lot to do with the power flow of the a8 and when lockup hits. The A8 mostly locks up unused clutches to avoid un-necessary drag. Where as the 6l80 will always have at least 3 clutch packs free spinning. Then lock up will go on for both pretty much any time it can. Even in second, off and on. That way you really shouldn't have too high of temps. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you start having chatter just add some trans lube friction modifier.

The A8 is a pretty good transmission. I like the 6l80 a lot more, but I think they're pretty good. If your tuner isn't careful when making a lot of torque you can break the input shaft though.

Hoxxoh, there is a TSB to replace the internal harness that contains the sensor $350 for harness , $700 labor

During the summer mine acts the same but in the last few weeks it's been cold , in the 30's , it pops a code .. been reseting it for 2 years now

Hi Dave. Any chance you have the TBS number and year it was released? I've scouted around, but haven't found it yet. Thanks.

HOXXOH , the TSB was on the corvette action center but its not there now , My dealer knew about it and suggested that I check my fluid level which my lazy butt has not done yet

This video shows you exactly how to replace it and its not to bad so when i get pissed off enough I will replace it as I am coming up on a fluid change ( its on a Camaro but its the same harness )

Not sure why they quoted me $700 labor as they could pop it in during the fluid change

The dealer probably isn't taking the pan off your car to do the fluid swap. They use evacuators and refill machines. Taking the trans pan off a c7 isn't the easiest task because of the back bolts.

Sevinn. This is not about changing the fluid , it's about changing the internal trans harnesses because the orginal harness has a defect that affects the trans temperature sender .

Yes I know, but you mentioned popping it in during a fluid change, so I was letting you know how they do it on vettes. This would be alot of extra work. I could see them charging a few hours labor for it.

Thanks .... our dealer does not have the fluid change machine and drops the pan which would have to be done anyway as I want the filter changed . I know that dropping the pan is a pain but it's not 6.5 hours hard lol lol 😆

I have a quick jack and a fluid pump , I was planing on changing the fluid myself anyway so while I am in there I am going to change the harness , just need to get my butt in gear

I was assuming that was the cost of labor, harness and fluids which isn't that much of a stretch. Definitely doable on your own. What I do to drop the pan is undo to the top diff mount nuts, raise the trans and diff and wedge a socket or something between the mount and the diff and you should end up with enough clearance to get to those 10mms in the back.
