Default Why Do I Need This

2017 C7 Z06 A8. I have Whipple 2.9, port injection and all the supporting mods. I have a 160* thermostat and my engine never runs below 190*. Couple days ago in 55* ambient I’m running 197* at highway cruising. Can I just take the thermostat out and let it free flow? Crawford racing says no, leave it in, I’ll adjust the fans. Actually I think the thermostat is bad, as it was running 237* in 52* ambient today. Keeps getting worse, but why can’t I just take it out?

Yes, every street car needs a thermostat. Fix your issues and Chris can tune it. I am going through the same issues. Can't blame the tuner.

I’ll pull it and see what happens to coolant temps on an average. I get it provides constant temp but mine must be broken.

I have a 160 thermostat and my temp dosn't go above 200 in 90+ temps. That's with 15 psi logs and driving an hour +.Chris has helped me on multiple issues with my setup that didn't have anything to do with tuning. I am so happy with his services.

You can take it out to test it.

I don’t run a thermostat in mine at all because most of the time here on the Texas coast temps are warm to very, very hot. Depending on the outside temps I either don’t drive when cold or just take it very easy until the car warms up. But I’m far from stock. Someday I’ll upgrade the radiator and put the thermostat back.

If it’s a mishimoto I am almost sure it is bad.
in 2 months I had 3 go bad. Total junk.
test it in boiling water.

Running with out a thermostat is a bad idea for numerous reasons.

Just two off the top of my head:
Slow warm up.
No temp regulation.

I'm sure there are numerous other reasons.

Far too many people run comparable set-ups in many different cars without the problem you are having. Not a single one of the individuals I've spoken with over the years have said they were running without a thermostat, much less were doing so because they could not control temp with one. You are simply looking for more problems without. All the best, in any event.

I have the stock thermostat in my Z06 and at 70 to 80 mph with the cruise set my coolant temp runs from 188 to 182 on a 90 degree day. You really don't need a 160 thermostat as the stock one will do just fine. The thermostat sets a floor temperature but does nothing to control any temp above the floor. Removing the thermostat does diddly squat for reducing the engine's normal operating temperature but sure does slow how quickly the engine reaches its proper operating temperature.

Just tossing this out there...

As someone who has tracked this thing, and encountered heat issues, I have a few thoughts.

1. LT4 runs hot, STOCK. . . and I mean, to the point where it's pulling timing after 2-3 regular street pulls at WOT. I cannot overstate this enough, this car runs HOT.
2. Anyone who mods this car is just pushing it into that extreme area more.
3. I have "solved" the heat issues in my "somewhat stock" z06/z07. It took. . .
-The Zr1 radiator (subjective results)
-The Dewitts Aux Rad (subjective results)
-LG cheek coolers (amazing results)

From what I have gone through, seen and measured at my local track. I wouldn't mod this car for power unless you're willing to drill two 7x7 inch holes in the front bumper and put $3500 worth of extra radiators in there.

---- Results ----
I'm not going to dig out all of the stats I had, you can find my old threads on install processes for stuff I had done but ultimately at my local track I could hit 155 VMAX lap 1-2 and only 144 VMAX for the remainder of the day.
After cooling, we're pegging VMAX all day long. Proper cooling in this car is worth more consistent horsepower than anything, in my opinion.

Couldn’t agree more!! These things remind of the late 60’s 427’s. Seems now a days making power is simple but they put no engineering into getting rid of all the heat that power makes.
