I believe they are weights to dampen vibrations and reduce noise

you can see them here peeking out from the caliber. Don’t have a picture of just the pads anymore.

No problem! Also, not sure how long you've had the car or many miles you have on it as I'm thinking those are aftermarket pads based on the round dampeners. The factory HD semi-metallic pads actually came with square(ish) dampeners on them like the photo below. These are the semi-metallic pads which can be spec'd for a Z51 J55 RPO code car and are what came on my 2016 before I changed them out to PowerStops for dust purposes. The PowersStops actually come with the same tabs for the front pads only (pic with red calipers is from my car).
