Just wondering
I have a 2016 with magnetic ride. It has 41k and driven on the street only.
I heard a clunking noise recently in the rear and it sounded like a shock situation. I took it to the dealer who has serviced the car and the service rep told me the magnetic shocks were leaking.
Has anyone heard of leaking magnetic shocks at lower milage? It seems that I should get more than 40k easy milage out of them
thanks for reading
3 out of 4 were bad by 40,000 miles. I was shocked/dismayed but maybe the previous owner hit pot holed roads as I also had to replace a front rim later as well. Dealer wanted $5,000 to do the work; so I decided that I would replace them myself. Chevrolet was going to charge me $650 per shock! I ended up purchasing shocks online through RockAuto for $350 a piece. I bought a QuickLift with the money I saved and did it all myself.
I had two leaking last year found at my inspection so they wouldn't pass it. Mine's a 2015 and had around 18k on it at the time.
obviously not high mileage but almost a decade old car at that point.
Dealer wanted something ridiculous like a thousand bucks per shock to do the work.
I did all four myself since I had one leaking front and one rear so figured need to just do them all.
Pretty straight forward job, in the front had to release the top A arm to get the shock out.
I think I did all four corners in about 3 hours.
No re-programming needed, just plug them back in and good.
The car did ride better after I did them so I think they were all performing worse given their age.
They were soaked in oil when I removed them so not a scam by the dealer by any means. I know some guys say "some" leaking is ok, and sure I agree with that short term.
but if you plan on keeping the car obviously a small leak is not going to heal or something so IMO you might as well just do all four and get it back up to par.
I was noticing a rougher ride at 80k put it up on lift 2 of the shocks one front and one rear had a decent amount of oil on them ... bought a set of 4 online for about 800 bucks, not hard to put in just the rt fr if they made the wire on the car 3 inches longer it would be much easier to get that one plugged in.. that took longer than putting the shock in
