I agree, my cheap code reader said misfire on #1 and #7, but when they did the diagnostics on it, turned out to be #2 and #7. Yeah, I'm not worried about the money, to tell you the truth, I was afraid it could have been 3 or 4 thousand or even more. If I could have snapped my fingers and not had to load it up on the roll back and carry it in, would have easily given 2k just not to fool with it and would have been happy. Just glad to have my car back and running as it should. Maybe if something like this happens again, I won't be so scared to try to mess with it a little.
What's your point? Shops charge flat rate and not how long a job takes. Not a perfect system but if you want an estimate, them are the breaks. When my MB had a glow plug seize, the glow plug change became a head R&R with a trip to the machine shop. That was a known thing in the MB community but they kept to the estimate for the plug change. I suppose you would want to get an estimate and compare it with the actual work time and pay the lower of the 2 bills?
If I have to explain it to you , you won't understand.

I'd definitely be curious to see what the other plugs are like. I would YouTube the procedure to pull the plugs and see how they are. I have a sneaky suspicion the other plugs are not in the greatest shape although they haven't "checked out" yet. Without knowing what caused it in the first place, you can't be sure it won't come back again.
That depends. If my MB tech that I know for almost 2 decades told me that the bill would come to $4K, I wouldn't be worried since I know and trust him to tell me if the repair is worth the while or not. He has, on one of my other cars and I wasn't concerned but we have enough trust based on our long relationship after many trust building exercises. Same dealership and another guy I don't know says "I'll fix it for $500." and I have a ton of questions. I'm not saying the 2nd guy is dishonest but that I don't have trust built up so I can't trust someone I don't know.

If you could explain it logically, I'm reasonably confident I could understand. If it is an explanation based on emotions, I'm not as confident then.
As I see it, you are willing and able to do it for half the cost. The overheads for a hobby repair at your house is different from a enterprise but that's not important. If the job can be done by you in an hour, you don't like flat rate charging 2. If the job goes sideways and takes 4, you want him to stick to the 2 hour flat rate. Am I missing something?
