I have a 2014 Stingray, A6 transmission. I reversed it from my garage to my driveway, intending to park it in my driveway. However, once I braked in the driveway, the transmission **** was stuck and would not shift back to Park. The **** wouldn't move at all. My driveway is on a slight slope, so left with no other choice, I put the parking brake on and turned the car off in my driveway Then the car would not restart because the transmission is still stuck in reverse.
I suspect the initial problem might have been caused by a battery failure but I'm not sure. The battery was 4 years old but it gets parked in a non-heated garage during the cold winters here (in Alberta, Canada) which could have reduced the battery life.
Under normal conditions, I didn't think the car allows you to turn it off while the transmission is on reverse, but I' glad it did, otherwise I would have had to let it run until the gas ran out. Anyhow I replaced the battery in my delivery, but with a new battery installed, the car still won't start.
The car won't start because the transmission is in reverse but the transmission does not shift either, so its stuck. I'm not sure what caused this or how it can be fixed.
Does anyone have any insight they can share? For example is it possible for a mechanic with the right equipment to change from Reverse to Park without using the ****? Much appreciated.
I'll call the dealership when they open on Monday to see what they think, I'm guessing they will suggest it be he towed to their shop.
I have a 2014 A6, ouch. Do you have any mods? Anything new from the dealership?
No, mine is stock. Well, I have 2 very large Jake decals (one on each side of the car) if that counts as a mod
I just got it towed to the dealership this morning, so will see what happens.
Thanks for the reply. I used to post here quite a bit from around 2013 to I think 2020, but I forgot my password (for both my CF account and the email account I used when I signed up the old account).
Interested in hearing what the dealership finds. Sounds like the shifter cable running back to the rear tranny housing cannot move the rear tranny housing shift lever. That might be due to an internal failure in the tranny. I have never heard of this specific failure in the C5 thru C7 autos.
I had a c6 auto that did the same thing it was the rear shift cable grommet. It gets hot and brittle. Once it cracks the solenoid on the shifter will not kick out lever so car can be shifted.

My 2007 A6 had the front cable grommet split apart disconnecting the tranny from the console shifter. When either the front or rear grommet fails, the console shifter moves very freely as there is no longer resistance from the tranny. That does not appear to be what the OP is reporting which is the console shifter is out of Park and will no longer move from the Reverse position.
Hey guys, I got the car back today. It needed a new shifter cable. The part itself wasn't expensive but they charged 5.5 hours of labor (i think 1.5 to diagnose + 4 hours to replace the cable). Its working now though!
