What does the dealer charge to replace two Z51 rear shocks on a Stingray equipped with ride control and Z51? The rear of my Ray is starting to sound like a NYC taxicab. Thanks.

I'm an open book, here is exactly what we would charge for that.

two OEM mag ride shocks $757.72/ea
labor .9 hr @ $175/hr $157.50
Shop supplies $8.95
Total $1681.89
+ tax on parts.

Looks like MSRP is about $1000 per shock. So you're looking at $2k in parts and probably another $3-800 labor.

Why not just ask the dealer? It doesn't mean anything to a dealer that someone on here gave you a perception of cost. If you are asking does this group feel a price given you by the dealer is fair, thsts a different tact.

Get the GM OEM shocks on Rock Auto for $400/each and DIY it. If you can remove a wheel you can get it done. Easy job on a Corvette...

The MRC shocks don't fail all that often. Why do you think the shocks are bad? Noise in the rear doesn't necessarily mean the shocks are bad. Worn stabilizer bar end links are a more likely source of noise.

4 things you need to know.

What parts are being replaced
What quantity of parts
What is their labor rate
How many hours are they billing for what they are doing

Ask for an ITEMIZED quote. Someone can find out, based on what they are doing, if the labor hours are right.

Your best bet is to take your car to the dealer, have them diagnose what is actually wrong, and then give you a quote on what it will cost to fix. Otherwise it sounds like you're just wanting to throw parts at the car without knowing what's actually wrong.

When we tried to get some work done for something (wasn't car related) can't remember what, think it was appliance repair, my dad and I called like 10 different places and NO ONE would give out an hourly rate. You'd be shocked so many places absolutely refuse to give out rates or how many hours they bill you. It's standard practice now I guess to just charge "flat fees" for services.

For cars, I had to push the issue and they have to ask for someone more senior and give it to me.

I have an appointment at Cordes tomorrow morning at 9:30AM!!! I can't wait. The clunking coming from the right rear is getting under my last nerve.
