Default Torque Tube Alignment

Anyone got any tips for getting the torque tube to line up and fall into place? I've been fighting with it for days. I can get the torque tube housing about and inch from being flush to the bellhousing but it seems like nothing i try will get it the rest of the way in.

Throwout bearing to pressure plate clearance is good.

Don't try to torque it in using the bolts.

Keep playing with it until it seats.

For sure learned that the hard way, I did that the first time and got it completely back together then it kept blowing fuses when we tried to start it. Turned out it had the crank locked due to pulling the torque tube in that way.

so had to take it all back apart and check everything out, now trying to get it in the right way.

I'm considering disconnecting it from the trans and getting it bolted to the motor then connecting it back to the trans which seems easier.

I'd want to figure out where that gap is coming from. Agree you'll have better luck starting on the other end as it's the reverse of the removal procedure.

I'll post some links as I find them. See below.

.

@Bill Dearborn might have the service manual procedure for re-install.

Thanks for the links!

Thankfully my crank was locked and the car wouldn't even start so i don't think the thrust bearing could be damaged.

The gap I believe is due to the tip of the input shaft not going into the pilot bearing due to not being fully aligned as theat is about the distance i have left for the face of the torque tube housing to meet the bellhousing face.

Measurements of the throw out bearing to pressure plate are perfect, there's really nothing left that can cause it to not go in.

Somewhere around page 18 is reassembly.

Tilt the back of the engine down. Have the torque tube / transaxle at the same angle and guide it into place.

You'll note warnings in there about screwing up the block, clutch plate, etc doing what you did before. Hopefully all is good.

Just got the torque tube connected to the engine. Disconnected the torque tube from the transmission and then connected it to the engine first and with a little wiggling it went right in. Engine turns freely now.

Just got to put the trans back on now and all should be good.

Just was too hard to move it around as needed with it all connected i guess.
