Default Delaminated Pirelli scrubs…

Alright, I just made it back from Buttonwillow and could only do 3 sessions before my front Pirelli scrubs delaminated…
The tires only have 3 sessions on them since I got them from the vendor. There was supposedly 75% of life left. I monitored my pressures closely, aiming for 30 PSI hot.

Also, I just transitioned to mono ball control arms and this was my first track day with them. I had a reputable shop do a track alignment just before the track day. Upfront I’m running -3.0 camber, 0 toe and 7.5 caster. These are the specs I was running previously with street tires, with no issues.

Here are the pictures. The first one is the passenger side, with the inside of the tire nearly gone. The second one is the driver side, with the outside that is starting to delaminate.

any thoughts on what happened? Tires heat cycled out? Something not working out with my alignment? I’ll put the car on a quick jack tomorrow and will check if there is something obviously wrong with the suspension.

Removed the wheels and found some evidence of tire rubbing on the fender liners. This was not happening prior to yesterday’s track day. I’m wondering if the combination of slicks and mono ball control arms is too much to handle for the OEM sway bars (it was my first time running both slicks and the monoballs). Maybe I need to raise my ride height as well?
first pic is the passenger side. Second pic is the driver side.

I have had similar issues. First. Monoballs reduce spring rate slightly. The bushings add spring rate and now it’s just a free moving bearing. But before I did monoballs I found that the stage 3 splitter ends were rubbing on my tires. I cut about 1” off the top of them and shaved as much as possible.

Although this was only 1 tire set. It was also after a pb for me. Could also be you just got unlucky with a **** set of tires. This has only happened once in 20+ sets for me but bushings were getting older etc.

Thanks for the response. You’re right, it could be a bad set of tires.
That being said, there is clearly some rubbing going on. I had planned on upgrading to LG sway bars anyway…that should hopefully help.

I have the stage 1 front splitter so no rubbing there but I’m seeing some rubbing on the plastic trim along the edges of the fender…

Are you sure you didn’t lock up the tires. You were so so close to a blow out.

No lock up. I think I just put too many laps on delaminating tires, without being aware of it, of course…

But, yes, I was lucky the tire stayed in one piece…

With the tires rubbing the fender in that location, you might want to check the body alignment. I had that problem on the right front fender and a local body shop found the fender had tilted forward. I run -2.3 degrees of front camber and +7.5 degrees of caster at stock ride height with 18x11x18 CCW C10 wheels with Pirelli 305/660/18 tires. The car had been set up that way for a couple of years, but from one track season to the next, the tire suddenly wore through the spat, the top of the tall splitter end cap and started wearing the fender in the spot you highlighted. I wasn't sure what happened, but the body shop owner found out within an hour of my arrival. It took them a few days to correct the problem and make sure the right and left sides were adjusted the same way. That stopped the rubbing. Of course, that didn't stop the rubbing on the wheel well liners. The tires tear those apart at all four corners.

So, I installed LG sway bars with adjustable end links and that solved the issue. I was able to enjoy a trouble free track day yesterday.

The car felt really nice on turn in. Much less understeer. However, I have been fighting mid corner oversteer the entire day…I changed to the stiffer setting on the front sway bar but that did not resolve the oversteer issue.

Need to do some more fine tuning…

Interesting. I was just in Discount Tire last week and there was a man in there that had a set of Pirelli tires that had de-laminated too. He was getting them replaced under warranty. I have no idea of the tire model.
