Default Please help identify the noise

Hi guys,

I’m getting a random clicking/knocking noise from the bottom of the engine area on a 2015 C7 Z51 (8L90).
  • Noise is not perfectly rhythmic, follows engine speed but doesn’t happen every revolution
  • Starts about 1–2 minutes after cold start
  • Most noticeable at idle / low RPM, mostly disappears above ~2500–3000 RPM
  • Much louder from underneath, barely audible from the top
  • Oil pressure is normal
  • Oil filter is clean (no significant metal)
  • Recently had torque tube service (bearings/couplers)
I checked with a stethoscope and the sound seems strongest along the oil pan area rather than the top end or sides of the block.
I also opened the front bell housing access cover as mentioned here, but I couldn't 't tell that the noise was coming directly from the hole. It seemed more like center of the oil pan.

Attaching a video below.

Could this be flexplate, coupler, or something else?
Any input appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds are always hard to figure out. Did you try with your stethoscope on the front of the engine, all of the pulleys?

Belt tensioner? It's a very common issue.

It does kind of sound like that, and that is probably the best case scenario here, so worth a try to replace that first

I think people take the belt off and run the engine to hear if the sound is gone. I've never had to replace one on any of mine.

Might be a good point!

I’ll try removing the serpentine belt and listening to it today.

I was also told to check the torque of the flexplate-to-crankshaft bolts.

I’ll see if I can reach them through the bellhousing service hole.

I removed the serpentine belt tensioner, but the knocking from the oil pan area is still there.

I also checked the torque of the flexplate bolts, and they seem properly tightened.

I tried to look for signs of loose rivets on the flexplate, but through the access hole I didn’t see anything suspicious.

It’s also hard to pinpoint the source of the noise, as it seems to resonate throughout the entire oil pan.

Time to drain the oil into something that allows you to check for metal shavings or chunks 😵‍💫

Already done. The oil looks good, and so does the filter - no particles of any kind.
