You mean the engine shown in this article?

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/06/2...-leaked-photo/

I think your friend has heard a few things that aren't going to be.

The teaser shots show Michelin PSC's and I'm not sure what the hell an "Electro-Magneto Supercharger" is, I wonder if your source is credible if he's talking about the supercharger in the patent we saw today?

the GM rep is attached to it at the hip. It is in town for some sort of photo shoot. he has pictures but is under strict orders not to show anyone until after the Detroit auto show which is this week. as far as what the supercharger system is called, that is what I understood the rep called it. The 345 mm rear Pirelli tires are what is on the one they have because the TPMS light was coming on

Truckplay, I hope your info is good as it would be great to have a centrifugal supercharger. The roots type is just wrong for this kind of a car...especially with the already great low end of the lt1/4 engine. Electric steering...how cool would an electric blower be if feasible?

I think he meant the teaser pic of the wheel and fender. Hopefully everyone knows the other one is fake by now lol.

Get as much info as possible. Front tire size, etc.

If the SC is being turned by an electric motor and that motors power is coming from a crank driven magneto (in stead of GM having to come make some incredibly high out put alternator), then I would say the name would be fairly accurate. Even if it was given as just a description by the rep.

There's a Detroit show this week? If so cool, then you can show us the pics at the end of the week, right?

Electric driven SC would be amazing!

He probably means the supercharger has an electro magnetic clutch that disengages the supercharger pulley like an AC compressor when the blower isn't needed so the engine isn't using power to turn the blower while cruising. This is how the old 55k AMG's did their blower setup a decade ago.

And it works. I can't feel when the electric engages or disengages. Only draw back on my Mercedes is when you're cruising along above 3000 RPM and want to go WOT, the clutch won't engage. I guess it's to prevent shock to the system at the higher RPM's that would cause damage like breaking the belt.

Don't those blowers also go bad after 50k miles? I only bring it up because I was looking into getting a used E55 a few years back and remember reading about the blower wear issues. That's what contributes to the car's value dropping substantially after 40k miles. A new blower on an E55 was around $12k at the time.

56,000 on mine and no problems with it. Most of the time the rotors are not spinning so I doubt it would have as much wear as say the LS9 or LSA or the tens of thousands of 3.8L V6 supercharged engines GM has built where the rotors are spinning 100% of the time that the engine is running. It's possible that the electric clutch wears, but it has the same design as the electric clutch on the A/c compressor, and they aren't a high wear item.

Yeah I couldn't remember what the reason was, all I remember is it scared me away from an otherwise amazing car for an amazing second-hand price

Either way I see your point, plenty of other cars with factory blowers that are doing fine for many thousands of miles. And tbh I like the simplicity of supercharging compared to turbos, even if turbos are more efficient.
