The only reason the majority buy the z06 is because everyone knows it is a no holds barred track car...bragging rights...showing off. What is hilarious with your reasoning is this. If the car were built according to the wishes of your committee of show off car waxers, then no one would want one because it would not be a bad to the bone track car. Do you not see the disconnect with logic?
exactly what i was thinking.
i have been puzzling over why they did not extend the fenders.. the only thing i can think of is it is an aero issue (but c7r does not have them!) or maybe it is a cost thing (but they redid just about every other panel!).. but maybe since it is the front end, it is way more expensive because maybe (and i know nothing of these matters mind you) it would mean having to recertify for crash worthiness??? but that did not stop them from changing the rear bumper.. maybe they just had to draw the line somewhere on cost, and that line is the front bumper... the rear wheel extensions would have had to have been absolutely atrociously wide.
How does someone wanting a top of the line version of the Corvette, yet not take it to the track, keep you from tracking yours? Why does it matter to you what they do with their car and their money?
In my opinion, GM better be listening to the 99%'ers that will never track their Corvette, yet want a high performance model, instead of the 1%'ers that will take their car to the track. The 1%'ers wont pay the light bill at Bowling green, much less keep the doors open.
They did. It's called the C7 Stingray.
You cruisers want a high performance car, but you don't really want a high performance car. Which is it? High performance, includes aerodynamics to support the performance. They aren't going to build a car with top speed well over 200 mph where the front end takes off for Mars.
But seriously, if people can't respect the car for what it is and want to complain about things that are there for a functional reason, then maybe this isn't the car for them.
You guys are funny. I am very happy about the new Z and most likely buying one. No one knows how the 2 lower models are going to be optioned and look. The Z07 package is awesome and I know very beneficial to the track rats. If all 3 levels come with the Bushwacker flares...so be it. Sure the aftermarket will have some options for those who want a toned down version. It's all good.... I am gonna love this car but I don't think everyone is going to love everything about every car.
I wonder if GM will give away a can of wax and a lawn chair for all the automatic buyers?
Rumor has it that if you spring for the top of the line Z07 with an automatic, they'll even thrown in an EZ Up that fits right underneath a stowed Targa top.
All three levels get the gurney extensions on the fenders.
The Z06 will offer three, increasing levels of aerodynamic downforce:
The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and the rear spoiler from the Corvette Stingray’s Z51 Performance Package
An available carbon-fiber aero package - in either black or a visible carbon-fiber finish - adds a carbon fiber front splitter with aviation-style winglets, carbon fiber rocker panels, and a larger rear spoiler with a fixed wickerbill – a small, vertical tab at the edge of the spoiler that significantly increases downforce
The available Z07 package add larger winglets to the front splitter, along with an adjustable, see-through center section on the rear spoiler for track use. With this package, the Corvette Z06 delivers the most aerodynamic downforce of any production car that GM has tested.

I'm willing to bet the Gurney's are a one year deal. My sources say they are designing tooling for a new carbon fiber front fender that fits the wider tires and this front clip, but it won't be ready until 2016. It will look better and save weight.
At the risk of being labeled a waxer, while the Z07, "the Big Nasty" is a awesome looking car, the Stingray is better looking and much more coherent from a design standpoint. The Z06 is undoubtably better aerodynamically, but it pays a price in aesthetics.

At 2:50 in the video the aero engineer explains why the car is designed like it is. The gurney extensions help down force, covering the tires is secondary. I highly doubt after all the time and money spent on this they will change it.
Maybe GM should have put monster truck tires on there too so you old geezers can get in and out easier and not scratch the bumper taking your driveway straight on. The truly ironic thing about all this aero and these track-focused mods is that it's going to be a pig. That and in 10 years when prices come down I'll have to sift through all the POS automatic cars to get to the manuals.

Then why aren't they on the C7R ? Or the Ferrari 458, or the McLaren MP4-12C ? They are an add-on to keep the tires within moldline while using the Stingray's SMC-based fender. The 2016 Z06 will have a lighter carbon fiber fender that fits the tire per my GMTC source.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
